Sunnyside Connects Asheville Locals to the Rest of the Globe

Eccentric, bohemian, unique, colorful: as I walk around Sunnyside Trading Company, these are all words that come to mind.

Beautiful blankets and rugs, all with their own unique designs, surround me as I walk through the storefront. I pick up a pillow and glance at the tag attached to see “Mali Mudcloth” handwritten on the piece of paper. Everything I touch has a different history and tradition behind it.

This sense of culture is what makes Sunnyside so very special. Textiles from Turkey, Mali, India, Guatemala, Uzbekistan and North Vietnam can be found throughout their store in the forms of rugs, tapestries, pillows, chairs, and much more.

All of the bright colors and eclectic chairs, pillows, and blankets at Sunnyside were inspired by the travels of the owners, Charlotte and Will Hough. The siblings decided they would share their love for traveling and appreciation for other cultures by hand picking textiles from all over the world and bringing them back here, to Asheville.

Selling ethically sourced textiles promotes global thinking and supports the idea that we as humans have the power to work together and create a global community. Not to mention, it’s pretty cool to say you own something that was handmade with fabric that literally came straight from India!

You’re not just getting a pillow or rug when you shop at Sunnyside. You’re acquiring a one-of-a-kind, handmade piece of home decor that represents the history and traditions of another culture. Not only that, but you’re supporting the idea that humans can work collectively together and appreciate each other on a global scale. That’s kind of magical, don’t you think?

Visit Sunnyside’s retail shop or the warehouse and experience their “travel home” philosophy for yourself. Walk in and see the rainbow of colors and cultures that surround you, ask Charlotte and Will about their travels, take home a sculpture from Vietnam or a rug from Turkey. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. This is more than a home decor store, it’s a place that will inspire you.
